This Husker fan selfishly wishes junior Nebraska running back Brandon Jackson would reconsider. I understand his reasoning: The small class of backs available in the draft, next year’s crop looks to be loaded, etc.

I would argue that Jackson, who didn’t have a 1,000 yards rushing, would benefit from another year in several ways. First of all, more college reps never hurt anyone. Sure you can get hurt, but that’s a chance any athlete takes at any time. Jackson was a good back, but he would do wonders for himself if he could emerge as the “man,” (to use an overused term) in the Nebraska backfield. He would have to be able to catch the ball well enough that the coaches wouldn’t prefer Marlon Lucky in passing situations.

Running in a Callahan offense would also prepare him for the complexities of pro Os. Getting another year of reps in Coach C’s system would make the jump to a Shanahan or Belichick system a little easier.

The kid does have speed and toughness, but running in a committee backfield limits your experience.

Besides, I’d love to see him snap off about 1,300 yards around and through the Big 12 and move about five spots up Mel Keiper Jr’s Big Draft Board.

But then, I’m selfish.
